photo therapy:: Kannon's 16 month pics

These are a month overdue. We moved our computer upstairs, changed some files around, and I could never get them uploaded.  But here they are---FINALLY! I posted these on my photography blog as well.

We went to Long Beach, CA to visit my family and while we had some down time, Kannon and I hit the beach.  He loved the sand, the slide, the blue skies.  He kept pointing "up".  Clearly, we don't see enough sunshine in Seattle!

Our big boy, is now a 22 lb, running, jumping, signing, screeching toddler!  Oh joy!

Project 365:: Day 85

Day 85 We had a lazy day after having to drive to the airport at 4:30 this morning.  We cuddled, stayed in pjs, and one of us (Clark) chewed on his toes.  What a doll!

Project 365:: Day 84

Day 84 My uncle Paul treated us to some yummy burgers and a beautiful walk on this gorgeous Seattle day.  Clark loves this guy!

Project 365:: Day 83

Day 83 Hangin' with the cuzzzes.  My cousins (Amos & Noah) drove up with my Uncle Paul on Thursday and joined us for a quick bite at Revel.  Kannon loved these two cool dudes...I think the feelings are mutual.

Giveaway Winner!

Well, I delayed picking a winner as long as possible to ensure all my mamas had a chance to enter.  As long as I waited, we only ended up with 4 entries.  So, I went ahead and used Random.org and......

Katie...You and Ms. Kylie are winners!!!! Here is what she said
Yay for recipes!! I use Wholesome Baby Food too, LOVE IT! And what a fun giveaway! Those look amazing for on the go...
Okay so for favorite recipes, I don't have a favorite really, but anything that involves pears is a go for Kylie. She LOVES them. So I mix them with everything, chicken, veggies, or cereal. She is still eating pretty simply and we haven't really started with too many recipes, but I think she is ready! Can't wait to try out Pear Mango sauce and the Pear-Blueberry!!!
The best time saver I have found is making big batches and freezing them. It is soooo much easier to pop a cube out and unthaw it rather than making a fresh batch of food every feeding (which I never did anyway, but I think it would be very time consuming). There's my input! :)

Just send me your address Katie and I will get these in the mail tomorrow!  Nom-nom!

For those who didn't win, I will do another giveaway soon and this time, I expect a better turn-out!

Project 365:: Day 82

Day 82 Kannon is wildly independent and rarely shows his sweet side. He must have been feeling extra good to get this sweet and squishy--my heart just gushes.

Project 365::Day 81

Day 81 this kid hasnsome style an tude--did you see that eyebrow raise? So cute!

mama cooks:: baby food! (GIVEAWAY!!!!)

Okay, I haven't been around much these days.  Aside from the Project 365, I rarely post.  Lots of stuff has been going on in our house and our kitchen!  With Clark and Kannon both like horses, I have spent a lot of time in the kitchen, brainstorming new recipes, cooking, and looking for the next way to disguise spinach and broccoli.  I have a few recipes to share!

First, I get most of my recipes from Wholesome Baby Food which you should check out if haven't done so already.  This website was my go-to resource when we started solids for Kannon.  Now that Clark is eating solids I find myself referencing the website again, excited to see new combinations and new ideas for even toddler food.

When I am at home the boys eat homemade food.  When we are on the go I revert to squeeze pouches of organic baby food made by Plum, Ella's Kitchen, or HappyBaby and my Boon spoon attachment.  Kannon loves these pouches.  They saved our life when we traveled to California.  They are 100% pureed fruits and vegetables.  They do a great job of sneaking in a veggie with a fruit, and they are mess free.  I was hesitant to order a Boon spoon attachment for Clark but I am so glad I did.  It makes feeding him easier and the handy case is indispensable.   These products are definitely not cheap, but they are a great alternative to bruised bananas, sticky messes, and avoiding sugary snacks like animal crackers.  Trader Joe's makes Apple-Carrot Crushers which at $2.99 for a 4-pack isn't too bad--but you are limited to one flavor.  I dont have to worry about them opening in my bag, I can give one to Kannon when we are stuck in traffic, and he has fun trying to feed Clark! The combinations also give me inspiration for my at-home creations.

In honor of my "pouch love" I am doing a giveway.  On Sunday, March 20, I will randomly select one lucky winner to receive 3 pouches of food and a Boon spoon attachment.  To win you must reside in the US, you must be a "follower", include your email, and you must LEAVE A COMMENT answering the following questions:

1.) What your favorite babyfood recipe is (one of mine or yours)
2.) What is the best time-saving trick you have discovered

Now for some recipes:

Pear-Mango-Sauce
In a large pan, add 3 pears (peeled and cored) and 1 mango (peeled and cored) and cover with a small amount of water.  Bring to a boil, cover, and let steam for 8-10 minutes.  Puree, adding water until it is the desired consistency.

***I reserved a cup of "chunks" for Kannon.  I sprinkled them into yogurt and he loved them!

Apple-Carrot Sauce
Same as above, bring 3 apples (peeled and cored), 2 carrots, and a small amount of water to a boil. Cover and let steam until carrots are soft. Puree, until smooth, and strain through a mesh strainer for a finer puree.

Mango-Banana Puree
Steam a cut up mango and then puree with banana.

***You dont actually have to steam mango but I do for a finer consistency for our little guy.

Pumpkin-Banana (FAVORITE!)
One can of pumpkin, 3 bananas, puree.  It is that simply.  Plus, they freeze beautifully together!

Pear-Barley
In a pan, bring 1 cup of barley, 3 shredded pears, and 3 cups of water to a boil.  Cover and simmer until barley is cooked.  Puree until smooth and press through a fine mesh strainer.

***I also reserved a cup of this for Kannon.  He LOVED this!  I added some almond syrup and milk and he ate the whole bowl in minutes!

Peas & Pears (I know, weird)
Steam 1/2 cup of peas with 2 pears (peeled and cored) until soft.  Puree adding, water until smooth.  Strain through a fine mesh strainer until smooth.

***I know it sounds weird but both my kids loved this.  I sometimes added cardamom to boost the flavor.

Pear-Berry Puree
Steam 2 pears (peeled and cored) and 1 cup of blueberries.  Puree and strain.  Yummo!

Ginger-Carrot-Apple
Boil a one inch cube of ginger, 2 apples (cored and peeled) and 2 carrots until soft.  Puree, adding water if neccessary and strain.  So delicious!!!!

***I know you dont think of ginger in baby food, but it is delicious and both my kids LOVE it!

Ginger-Apple-Parsnip
Same as above, except roast ginger, apple and parsnip.

Sweet Potato-Apple-Blueberry
Boil 1 peeled, diced sweet potato, with 2 apples (peeled and cored) until soft.  Add 1 cup of blueberries (fresh or frozen) in the last few minutes of cooking.  Strain, reserve water, puree (adding reserved water if necessary).

Final Notes:
My food processor broke, so I have been using my immersion blender and strainer and am happy to say it does a better job pureeing than my food processor!

Interesting enough, my pediatrician told us to skip the "4-day wait" rule.  She felt that since we have no history of family allergies that it would be fine to try whatever we want.  With a few exceptions, no strawberries, dairy, honey, eggs, until Clark is old enough.  This was music to my ears!  I know Kannon got sick of eating 4 days worth of peas, so it was refreshing to be able to introduce whatever we want.  Also, now that Kannon can handle a spoon, he enjoys the same purees that Clark does.

Project 365:: Day 76

Day 76 Already best friends, Clark lets Kannon roll right over him!  They share such love. Just wait 10 years.

Project 365:: Day 75

Day 75 Clark got a new hairdo from big brother Kannon.  Kannon thought it would be great to rub lotion in his hair and spike it.  What a cutie!

Project 365:: Day 74

Day 74 Kannon is our new iPod hijacker.  He likes to take pics, listen to music, and let viruses infiltrate our email and computer.  I cant wait for teenage-hood.

Project 365:: Day 73

Day 73 we have gone on a few playmates this week in an attempt to meet new mamas. Kannon loves the outings especially because we usually end up at Firehouse-- our favorite coffeshop and playroom.

i hate spam

Apparently, somewhere between Kannon pushing computer keys and my morning coffee we were attacked with spam.  If you received any emails from us with mysterious links, DO NOT OPEN them!!!!

I apologize for the inconvenience.  Happy Monday.

Project 365::Day 72

Day 72 Kannon loves dipping his food into various items. Today he dipped pasta and broccoli into cheese sauce and yesterday he had fun dipping cookies in yogurt. So much for those fork skills--at least he is having fun.

On another note, we went to Joule last night for an amazing soup dinner. We all slept well with bellies full if posole, tostadas, and yummy churros.

Project 365::Day 71

Day 71 Clark and Kannon were no strangers to the activity mat.  I often wondered what these kids were so happy giggling at so I got on their level.  Somehow, even though I spend day after day on the floor, covered in pet hair, baby spit up, playing with blocks, books, and legos, I missed the "funhouse mirror" on the activity mat.  Now, all those giggles and squeals make sense--I would laugh too if I saw myself in the mirror looking like that!

Project 365:: Day 70

Day 70 We had a crazy day around here....so everyone was excited for bedtime!

Project 365:: Day 69

Day 69 Finally.  Clark woke up once last night.  I got some sleep and was in bed by 12 and up at 7.  Clark woke up somewhere around 3 but I think I was still asleep so it is all a blur.  Either way, we are both happy with the progress.  Sleep....what a beautiful thing.

Project 365:: Day 68

Day 68 Today I put on high heels (a first in 2 years!) and my fancy pearls. I packed my coffee, chart, and bagel and head out the door. It was my first time leaving the boys for so long. I rocked my interview with Teach for America and Dale rocked Clark to sleep. It was a great day had by all. Coming home, my feet were sore and I was tired, but happy to be in the arms of my sweet boys.

Project 365: Day 67

Day 67 Good idea!!! Dale suggested checking out a new restaurant in honor of my interview with Teach for America tomorrow. The food was excellent, the drinks delicious. Let's hope tomorrow goes as smooth!

Project 365:: Day 66

Day 66 My grandfather always said our stomachs were Italian. Say hello to Mario, aka Clark. And on a similar note, I made handmade lemon and black pepper pasta. I kneaded, rolled, and cut our delicious pasta....maybe more than our stomachs are Italian!

Project 365:: Day 65

Day 65 We joined a few friends for Sunday Chicken Dinner at the Hi-Life. We waited for a table for 20 minutes but were served a plate full of chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, carrots, and biscuits within 3 minutes of sitting down. Kannon was pleased to see the pile of food in front of him--he promptly dug in with his new fork skills!

Life Update

We have been less than conversational these days.  So far this year we have been battling colds, airports, work, tantrums, and adapting to our constantly changing life.  In between the chaos, we barely have time to pick up the phone, email, or even chat with best friends---we are simply too tired.  Alas, I feel an end is near as things begin to even out (for the moment!).  So here are some updates on all of us.

1.) Kannon is growing into a little man more and more everyday.  I feel so blessed to have such an incredibly handsome, gentle, smart, and funny little guy.  He jumps, dances, spins in circles, and runs across our floor.  He climbs beds, tables, couches, and anything given the opportunity.  He eats everything and loves the Trader Joe's Apple-Carrot Crushers in particular.  Kannon is using spoons and forks and drinking out of big kid cups.  He can sign "sleep, milk, water, please, change, poop, water, eat, hungry, and more".  In fact, twice this week he has signed "change me" before he even pooped!!!!  And yesterday in a moment of fussiness, he walked up to Dale and with two exaggerated hands he signed "sleep".  This kid knows what he wants and how to get it!!!  He loves his brother and has a new playmate, Pike (7 months old).  Together they have been building legos, reading books, and playing with blocks.

Side note:  I was getting Pike, Kannon, and Clark ready for bed.  Both Pike and Clark were crying while I was mixing a bottle for Pike.  I turned around and Kannon was handing his sippy cup to Pike and patting Clark's belly with a little blankie at the same time!  This kid is such a big helper already!!!

2.) Clark is the happiest baby I have ever met!  He is constantly smiling and laughing.  He laughs at the dog, Kannon, Dale, shadows--EVERYTHING!  I have met some happy babies but Clark has smile lines already from the perma-smile splashed across his face.  He knows how to roll-over but doesn't like to do it.  He has found his hands and feet and everything in between.  Clark has started eating solids (slowly) and while it has improved the sleep situation, it is still not great.  Clark sleeps from 8-8 but he wakes up at 10, 12, 2, 4, and 6 most nights.  Sometimes he surprises us with an 8-5 stretch but it is rare.  I AM TIRED!!!  But its worth it for this cutie pie!

3.) Dale still loves his job.  He recently had the pleasure of serving Dana Cowin (editor of Food & Wine mag) and redesigned the wine menu.  The chefs he works for have been nominated for another James Beard Award.  With the weather getting nicer, Dale has started riding his bike to work which has meant many more outings for the boys and me.  Dale is looking into the next level of the Court of the Masters Sommelier.  The next test is in September but its almost $600 and a lot of studying!  We have to see where things are going before we just hand over our credit card. In between work and sleep, Dale loves taking the boys for walks, tasting new beers, of course cooking for all of us starving fools!

4.)  Me.  Well, I am tired.  I have had a lot of stuff going on.  First off, I have a BIG interview next Wednesday at 9 for Teach for America.  I applied in 2008 and was not accepted but it was fortunate because I met Dale, got married, and moved to Montana.  This year, TFA is starting in Seattle and I realllly want to become a corps member for so many reasons--I wont bore you with them.  Keep your fingers crossed!!!!  If I am not accepted I will be opening my own photography studio to grow my photography business and finish the details on a little exciting project (SECRET!).  I have decided to stop selling on my Etsy site as it has become too much to keep up with.  With everything that I have going on, knitting a few hats and rolling dryer balls isnt really on the top of my list.  I have been so exhausted lately that staying up to watch/knit has become impossible.  So farewell Etsy, you have been good to me.

See, we are good.  We have not fallen off the earth or disappeared in a snow-storm.  Our lives just never stop moving.  I dont stop moving between 8-8 and even when the kids are sleeping work is to be had.  I just got back from vacation but I am already ready for another one!!!

PS For those of you have had problems/dropped calls on our phone.  We got new phones!!!  Hopefully these will hold a charge and avoid Kannon's sticky fingers so we can talk without disruptions!

mama travels:: San Juan Islands

These are a bit over due. I have been spectacularly busy since our return from California and haven't made time to edit and upload photos. Sorry.

We went to San Juan Island last week and had a fabulous, albeit snowy time! We drove to the ferry in snow-covered, unplowed roads and really debated staying another day. As it turns, our timing was perfect as San Juan and the rest of Western Washington continued to get snow dumps, wind, and bone-chilling temperatures. Here is a sneak peak of some of our pics.  More to come!

Project 365:: Day 61

Day 61 Hmmm....I wonder where Kannon could be???

Project 365:: Day 60

Day 60 Kannon finally learned to use a spoon! Yay!!! Should I also mention that he is eating delicious pear barley with almond cream cheese.  Double-Yay!
