mama vents:: costs

I have been deeply troubled the last few days by the high costs of living.  What are we working towards as a society?  $25,000 cars, $40,000 tuition bills, $1200 per month for childcare, added with healthcare costs, gas, and food?  Where does that leave us?

I overheard someone say that to live a comfortable life  in Seattle you need to earn $200,000 a year.  Whether this is true or not it certainly got me thinking.  As I embark on a new journey of becoming a working mother, I have had to ask myself if this is the right decision.  I will have to pay someone at least $1200 a month to watch my kids, pay for gas and commuting---hell, I might have to buy a second car.  There will be expenses for clothes, a laptop, coupled with books, testing fees, and an overall change in lifestyle.  All for a $42,000 salary?  Is this even possible?  Yet, I have to work.  Not only would the second income be nice, health insurance, retirement plans, life insurance etc, but this is an opportunity to show that I am more than just a mother.

Now that the calculator is adding up, I really have to question myself, what is so bad about just being "mom".  Nothing. I love it.  But again, we need a second income.  We need to buy a house. We need health insurance.  We need to start saving for those big fancy overpriced colleges.  We need a retirement plan.  And apparently we need to make over $200,000 to live comfortably in Seattle.

Why?  Why are things so expensive?  How did we get to $4/gallon for gas?  How did we get to $40,000 a year for private school tuition?  How is childcare $1200/month, PER kid?  We can justify $600 for a new iPad and military funding, yet we are cutting healthcare and education.  What are our priorities?  What are we teaching our children?  How did we become such a consumerism driven society?

I ask that fellow friends and parents really ask themselves about their lifestyle.  Are new toys important?  New iPhones and new cars? What about healthy eating?  Books?  Family night?  What happened to public transportation?  What about teaching our children that society matters; education matters, healthcare matters; people matter. Just looking at our lifestyles and the high cost of life, there is a troubling discrepency between what we want our world to look like and what it actually is.

As I continue to research my options, I am left with one question:  why am I leaving my kids at home to go on to teach others?  Is it fair?  And the answer is yes.  Education matters.  I am a born-teacher and I wish to teach my children and ALL children.  I may have my own agenda and dream of Utopian society, but is that really bad?  Is it really bad to want to teach children how to become active and involved citizens, aware of their global and local communities?  Is it really bad to teach social justice and remind ourselves about solidarity, community, giving back?  Is it really bad to empower children and make their potential known?

What kind of world are we living in?  What do we want our children to learn?  What are our priorities?  What are YOUR priorities?  We need to make some changes.

Alright.  Just a rant.

mama vents:: one hot mess

Its been a while.  I haven't vented to my computer because when I need a good long vent session, its usually drowned by screaming children or barking dogs.  Tonight, at almost midnight, I feel the need to vent.  Scream. Shout.  Jump around.

I have no reason to vent.  Its just one of "those" days.  Remember that birthday card Dale got me last year?  My life suddenly looks like the picture.  I barely have time to get a few sips of coffee in before babies call for my attention.  Lets look at the numbers.

Cups of Coffee in a day: 4, sometime 5 of which only one was hot when drunk.
Hours of Sleep: 4 1/2, maybe 6 if I get to sleep in.
Loads of laundry in a week: 6
Pee-breaks in day: 3, maybe 4....I know this is bad, I just forget!
Meals eaten in a day: 1, 2 if you count the mini-sized snicker bar
Showers in a week: 1...ugh it smells in here.
Time not attached to a baby: 2 1/2 hours during naps...if I am lucky.
Warm meals eaten in a week: none
Items fished from toilet: 4
Shirts dirtied by spit-up: 6....then I stopped counting.
Cups of coffee::  NOT ENOUGH!

Okay, there really is not enough caffeine in the world to wake me up some days.  I stumble around half-awake avoiding kids toys, dirty clothes, and trying my hardest not to lose my cool.  There is so much I want to vent about (my husband's closet, dishes in the sink, spilled milk, blah, blah) but there is no need. Tomorrow, it will be the same.  Some days, I am bothered by this, and other days I walk around like a hot-mess but absolutely elated with my life. But on both days, my life looks a lot like this.

mama vents:: the countdown

I am only a few hours away from striking my due date.  It is daunting.  No longer can I pretend that baby#2 is still months away from arriving, no longer can I deny that our family of 3 is about to become 4.  Crappola.  If baby#2 doesn't arrive by Tuesday we are set to schedule an induction October 8, when I will be 41 weeks.  Holy crappola.

My easy, well oiled routine is about to get all kinds of crazy.

You know you are 40 weeks pregnant when:

Your shoes don't fit
Your maternity clothes are too small
You hate your husband, dog, cat, and everyone in between
You have given up on doing laundry for the 3 articles of clothing that still fit
You kind of smell like pee everytime you hit a pothole or drive on a bumpy road
You try to paint your toenails but end up painting your knees
Your bed is overwhelmed by 9 pillows, all for you
Your husband is shivering besides you because its a million degrees and all the windows are open
You are tired of the phone calls and people asking if you are still pregnant

Needless to say, I am still glad I am pregnant and despite the fact that I am 100% annoyed I would rather be pregnant than trying to figure out how to nurse a newborn and make Kannon dinner at the same time.  I am savoring every last pregnant day possible and if I have one more person tell me I am insane, you try wearing my shoes.

mama vents:: the second child

Kannon was 100% planned and we were prepared for his arrival MONTHS in advance.  We took every class possible, read every book, painted, decorated, and had his laundry clean and folded before he was even here to wear them.  We had a baby shower.  Our family begged for updates and name ideas.  We were so anxious for his arrival I started walking miles, drinking red raspberry leaf tea, and doing everything short of castor oil to ensure a speedy arrival.

Things are a little different this time around.  I love being pregnant and while I am uncomfortable, hot, and swollen---I am wishing I had an elephant's gestation period.

Don't get me wrong, I love that we will soon be welcoming a second child into our family.  We wanted them close together.  I am scared though.  I am going to be a mom to two boys.  Everywhere I go, people tell me the second child will be a hair raiser---crazier, demanding, and full of sleepless nights.  Things aren't exciting this time around.  Nobody has asked to know our baby's name.  Nobody calls for updates.  We don't have a nursery ready---in fact we don't even know where we are going to be living.

I feel guilty because I haven't been able to focus on this pregnancy as much. I live off 6 hours of sleep, drink 2 cups of coffee a day, and sometimes don't remember when the last time I ate was.   I am less than 6 weeks away from my due date.  I worry that people are going to resent this baby.  I worry that I won't have time to be a good mom to both.  I worry that Kannon is going to hate me.  I fear the chaos.  I am anxious, stressed, and feeling overwhelmed.

Alas, my due date is 6 weeks away and that means we will be welcoming him into the world soon.  Our family will become a family of 4.  I am excited to smell that newborn smells and to cradle 2 sleeping babies in my arms.   There is no time to dwell, just time to enjoy my last few weeks with Kannon and Dale.

mama vents:: bad about blogging

I used to be so much better about blogging.  When I had time, an office job, and something to write about I had no problem scribbling (er...typing) out my personal feelings and updates.

Then, along came baby, baby #2, moving, and the feeling that there is nothing special to share.  Yes, Kannon is growing like a weed, taking small steps, and saying "dada, mama, and baba".  Yes, baby#2 is kicking away ( we finally have a name but we are not sharing!!!).  Yes, our lives are completely crazy, chaotic, and out of any sort meaningful order. But we love it.

I haven't been blogging because I haven't really had anything positive to say.  Despite all the wonderful things going on in our life, it is hard to be happy when we are constantly worried about how to pay the bills.  We took this job, moved to Idaho, and put everything we had at risk.  We crunched the numbers, checked up on the company, did the math, and moved.  Here is the vent:  We were mislead, screwed over, and struck with badluck and have somehow miraculously managed to survive on $700 month.  Ouch.

It has been hard to blog, when those numbers and stress have been eating at every piece of my body for the last 90 days.  I am hoping that things will get under control soon but it might mean another possible move.

In any case, Dale and I are still learning how to be parents, raising a family and hoping that you make the best decisions for everyone.  In the meantime, I try not to stress too hard about the future and focus on the present hoping that this dark cloud will someday lift.

mama vents:: worst week

Usually these vents come on Tuesday, my least favorite-- usually very bad day of the week.   Tuesday came and went and before I had a chance to post I watched our life go out of control.

Moving is always rough.  We were busy setting up new utilities, changing information, finding new doctors.  It has been go, go, go since Monday morning.  Dale met his new boss, which went great.  We finally found a grocery store that carries our favorite local and organic products. I celebrated my first Mother's Day....so I cant say that our week was all bad.  Until yesterday.

I am a backseat driver.  It drives Dale nuts but he loves me for it.  My backseat driving has saved us from missing exits and turns but no matter how loud I screamed "BRAKES" yesterday, we still found ourselves slamming into the back of a 4Runner in front of us.

We drive a 1998 Ford Explorer and yesterday when we approached the stoplight Dale suddenly found himself with no brake pressure, pedal to the floor, like sliding on ice.  We slammed.  Everyone was fine, even Kannon who was mostly shaken up with excitement.  We exchanged information, got a tow home, and thought the worst of our day was over.

Our car was parked in front of our house, which is slightly sloped, but nothing that caught our attention yesterday.  We checked the mail, grabbed some belongings out of the car, and reached our front door only to see our car ROLLING DOWNHILL!!!!  The parking brake had failed!

Dale dropped everything, ran after the car, and tried to turn the wheels but ended up jumping out of this moving vehicle as it approached the busy street below us.  Thankfully, we watched our car run over a mailbox, a fence, and finally land in our neighbors front yard instead of the street.

All in all, we are very lucky.  The brakes could have gone out on the freeway; the car could have rolled into the street; somebody could have been killed.  The damage is really minimal to all involved, but we sadly said goodbye to the Explorer today as we know we will probably not see her again.

The brake estimate is $1300 (best case scenario) and the damage sustained is at least $1000.  Our car is only worth $2700.  Our insurance company will cover damage sustained by the accident but the brakes are our responsibility.  Being as we just moved, putting nearly all of our savings into this, we are saying good bye.  Thankfully, we never sold my Toyota Camry.

I know I am 20 weeks pregnant...but tonight, I am soaking in a bathtub with a glass of red wine and welcoming the weekend.

mama vents:: hot water

It is time for another vent.  It is Tuesday and we all know how I feel about Tuesdays.  Terrible.  No good, very bad days.  On this terrible Tuesday not only am I sleepless, hungry, and tired but I am also stinky thanks to our hot water heater.

Dear Water Heater,

You have provided so many with warm luxorious showers over the year yet when it comes to my turn I suddenly find your water cold and harsh.  This a recent change in our relationship and I am puzzled as to why you have turned your back on me.

Perhaps it is the strain that our household has been putting on you.  I know the dishwasher and the washing machine don't help.  Perhaps it is the houseguest that has been making a permanent appearance in the apartment downstairs.  Perhaps it is simply that everyone else takes showers longer than necessary.

I don't ask for much.  All I want is a shower.  This is the forth time this week that I have found cold water instead of warm.  I haven't showered since Washington.  I am tired of being stinky.  I smell worse than my wet, muddy dog and spit up covered son.

So on this terrible Tuesday, please refill your warmth quickly because I am two seconds away from asking the neighbors if I can use their shower.

Much Love,
Stinky Mama

PS While you are at it, will ask the dishwasher loading ferries to come.  Thank you.

Mama Vents....

Tuesdays are rough. On Tuesdays I wake up remembering that I still have four days left until the weekend, its not really a new week anymore, I am tired...blah, blah, blah. I hate Tuesday.

Last night, I slept, interrupted every two hours by insanely vivid dreams, a baby crying, and a husband who snores, coughs, and whines every 10 minutes.

Dear Husband,

You think you are stinky? You want to take a shower? I haven't showered in a week! And you forgot to mention that Kannon peed on my side of the bed last week.

This is your last night to sleep in? Forget it! You dont go to work until 1pm, I on the other hand have to be back at work at 8am, so good luck with that!

You dont want to get up to feed Kannon? Hah! I got up with him every night while we were in CA and you were sleeping peacefully in your big bed! Oh and did I forget to mention that I have been nursing Kannon every night since the day he was born! Your turn!

You have a headache? Your back hurts? Boo hoo, I had a back ache for 9 months and that headache I got when I before I found out I was pregnant last year....well, its still here!

(TMI) I am sorry our sex life is "not exciting". I just popped out a baby 4 months ago and I barely have time to shave my legs let alone feel attractive enough to get it on. Be happy with action you do see and if 3 times a week isnt exciting enough for you, I suggest you buy a magazine.

You want to trade me jobs? Try a whole 8-hours of Kannon to yourself. Remember what it feels like to pee, eat, drink, check emails, watch tv and kiss it good bye. Because somedays Kannon wants to be held for 8 hours. So forget free time. Its not that easy. I bet you wouldn't survive four hours.

You are upset because dinner wasn't ready. See above. You are lucky if I have had time to brush my teeth by the time you get home.

Alright, that may have been a bit cruel. Sometimes, the biggest baby is not the one wearing diapers, rather its the one sleeping next to you every night.

But seriously, I love you and Tuesdays wouldn't be the same without you. You make life interesting, more exciting, full of happiness, laughs, romance, and joy. But sometimes you also piss me off. Happy disgruntled Tuesday.

Love,
Your #1 fan,
Your best friend,
Your wife.

Birthdays....

The b-day card Dale gave me.

Birthdays just are not exciting anymore. At least mine. I can't remember the last birthday bash I enjoyed as I usually prefer celebrating with Dale, quietly in the comfort of my home.

This is not to say that birthdays aren't memorable. Trust me, I will treasure Kannon's b-day every year until the day I die. I celebrate week birthdays, month birthdays, and 1/4 of the year birthdays. When you see a 7 pound being come into the world, it is hard to forget that moment.

But I don't remember my birthday. What used to be a call to celebrate with booze, friends, and bars is now an excuse to sleep in and demand breakfast in bed and celebrate Kannon's 1/4 of the year birthday.

Which is exactly how I celebrated my birthday.

Dale, Kannon, and I drove to Bozeman after a sleepy morning to continue our celebration. We visited with some old friends, enjoyed time antiquing (a skill my mother has generously passed down), and eating at our favorite establishments.

Yet, the trip was less about me and more about showing off Kannon and his chubby cheeks. He met new faces, saw new places, and slept in the bed with us. He was spoiled.

Visiting Lei-Anna, my former teacher

He had a few minor fusses--mostly because he was tired and ready for bed. While he may have loved sharing a bed with us, Dale and I were ready to go sleep in the car! I kept getting punched in the face by Kannon, not too mention he used me as a pacifier the whole night. He woke up any time one of use moved and demanded to be fed. I have no idea how any one co-sleeps.

All in all, we had a good weekend, watching our little man discover more of the world but now we are exhausted and happy to be home, in separate beds.

"No-No Pie" Dog Treats

There are days when everything in our world is turned upside down and backwards. Days when I can't even stop to take a sip of water. Days when there are dishes in the sink piled a mile high. Days when I don't (ashamedly) remember to change my underwear.

Days when Kannon wont take naps, eats every hour, and poops in the last clean pair of pants. I hate these days. Sadly, I also love these days. These are days when food taste like a gift from the Gods and crawling into bed (even for only 2 hours sleep) is a personal sanctuary.

These days are becoming more frequent now that I have gone back to work and Kannon is getting bigger---refusing his naps and demanding 100% of my attention. It is hard. I have learned how to type one-handed, balancing a baby on my knee and the keyboard on the desk. I have learned how to bake while wearing Kannon in a homemade ring-sling--although its not perfect, he usually ends up flour covered. I have learned to do a lot of things. Before baby I didn't know what a bumbo or bumgenius was but now I finding these words to be common place in our house.

These days, I sometimes forget my dog. I also forget the freshly baked pecan pie that I left sitting on the counter. Sadly, these days, I come home to find one happy dog and no pecan pie and shout "No, No, Pie!!!"

So in honor of every bad, crazy day, I have decided to make some "no, no pie" dog treats--so I can at least make one person happy with some yummy treats instead of sacrificing my beautifully baked goods to our canine friend, Emma.

But seriously, these treats are easy to make and will satisfy every ignored canine suffering from "new baby in the house" syndrome...or just satisfy any canine with a sweet tooth.

"No-No Pie" Dog Treats

2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (Emma prefers crunchy peanut butter)
1 cup milk

1.) Preheat the oven to 370 degrees.

2.) Mix the dry ingredients

3.) Add peanut butter until the mixture resembles coarse bread crumbs.

4.) Add milk and beat/knead until well incorporated.

5.) Roll out and use a cookie cutter or shot glass to cut your shapes.

6.) Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool completely before treating your dog.

Yields approximately 40 dog treats.

The Boob Shark.

My boob shark.

You have heard it before, the unmistakable sound from "Jaws", the 'da-duh' that triggers goosebumps and forces you to look around and check your back and make sure there isnt a feeding frenzy taking place.

That sound has been replaced by "wa-wah's" echoing in our bedroom, requiring me to pull out my boob and bite my lips as my little "boob-shark" latches on in an all too familiar frenzy.

The mere smell of milk sets him off and he begins to root around furiously in search of his target--the ever so forgiving nipple. God forbid, he loses sight of his target in the darkened room, as he will latch onto anything--a finger, a shirt, the sheet-- only to spit it out with anger and rage.

For whatever reason, my little angel who nurses so peacefully during the day turns into "Jaws" at night. Hence the reason we have started calling him, "the boob shark", so nursing mothers and sore nipples beware because when the lights go down, the boob shark is on the prowl.

Dear Work...

I am tired of coming into my office everyday. Tired of hauling my very pregnant self into my husband's explorer, tired of searching for the seat belt clip, tired of circling for parking and then walking the precarious slippery hallways only to be asked "you are still here????" or "still no baby???".

I do not want to stop working but at the same time I can't handle another person asking me "where's the baby???". Don't you think that if I had the baby, I would relay that information??? Seriously, I am getting embarrassed and feeling like everyday is a walk of shame because I am still pregnant. My due-date is next week and yet you have been asking me these questions since September 1st!!!!

For the record, I plan on showing up everyday until this baby pops and until then please refrain from opening your mouth!

Thank You,
A Seriously Aggravated Pregnant Lady

39 Weeks....Its almost time!!!

We just returned from our 39 week appointment. So far in this pregnancy I have gained 19 pounds and have been textbook from the start. Our baby has always measured on target, so I shouldn't be at all surprised if our baby makes his grand entrance on his due date.....however, I am losing patience as the 8-pound bowling ball sitting on my bladder is getting uncomfortable as is the daily bought of false labor contractions.

This week, I am still 2 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and the baby's head is still "right there". My doctor has given me permission to have this baby any day now (I hope the baby heard him!) However, if we have not had the baby by Monday the 26th our doctor would like to schedule an induction for that week...most likely the 28th, when I will be 40 weeks 1 day. He said we could wait until November 3rd to schedule an induction but realistically, it's easier to do before the baby gets too big and that a lot more complications can arise when the baby is overdue by too long. I have mixed feelings!!!! I hope that the baby will get here before I have to make a decision. I really don't agree with inductions but at the same time, I feel I will be able to sleep easier at night knowing that if this baby doesn't come by Monday, then he will come Wednesday, happy and healthy (YIKES!!!). (Our family has a history of GIANT babies....so lets hope this one is still the 6 1/2 pounds the doctor was predicting!)

So until then, I am doing everything short of shaking this baby out!!! I have continued with my walking and am now bouncing on a yoga ball playing "Katamari" (its an amazing game, I am hoping the visualization of growing my katamari from 1-10cm will be enough to make my cervix do the same!) and am headed in search of some spicy spicy food!!!

Its STILL September????@!@#?

As usual, my pregnancy is progressing perfectly. Aside from the back ache, hip pain, night sweats, and a cramped stomach, I still love being pregnant (especially when our little one makes his nightly round of belly theater!). Nonetheless, I am tired, cranky, and so excited to get rewarded with a new bundle of joy come October! On our way out of the doctor's this morning, I made another 2 week appointment, hoping that it would be October.....but no, it is STILL September!!!! I am still cursing as September seems like its going to drag on forever!!!!

We had our 34 week appointment today and everything is going great. Baby is looking good, healthy, and on-schedule. Of course, we already knew that! Our doctor reported to us that the baby is head-down (still) and is looking like he will be a good size, about 6 pounds 5 ounces....for the sake of my labor, let's hope he's right! Our due date is still October 27th, so let the countdown begin: 43 days!!!!!!!

I have been digesting almost every video, book, and magazine that I can get my hands on regarding childbirth and pregnancy. I am pretty sure I have wiped the library clean on their selection--I have an addiction. I love learning about the process! I am seriously considering going back to school for nursing, midwifery, or becoming a doula because I cant stop learning....however, I recognize that this is a common phase for many pregnant women so no worries, I haven't sent those school applications out yet! Anyways, despite my library collection of videos I still wanted to take a birthing class, so Dale (dragging his feet behind me) and I headed to a birthing class on Saturday.

All in all, the class was interesting. I didn't feel I learned anything new but it was good to connect with Dale and actually practice labor positions, pain management, and talk about a birth plan. We felt really confident after leaving the class especially as so many of the other couples we so unprepared! Our instructor thanked us after the class and told us that she wished she could have a couple like us in every class because we were so relaxed! Now, that the class is over, I am ready for the fun to begin!

We also got a tour of the hospital, which was superb. We were surprised to find that our hospital encourages natural childbirth, the use of showers and tubs during delivery, has 100% rooming-in with baby (all of which are private!), and has a strict quiet hours policy so mom and dad can bond with a new baby! After hearing horror stories of some folks experiences, I was really nervous but feel great now.

I painted the baby's room yesterday with some leftover paint I found in the basement. We have a crib, dresser, changing table, and clothes, now all we need is a carseat!!! I keep kicking myself to order it, because it will take a few days with shipping....

Dale and I are headed to Bozeman/Big Sky next weekend for his wine class and exam. We are very much looking forward to the little road trip and are going to make a vacation out of it!! Until then, Dale is studying hard for the class and I am finishing up the baby's room. I promise I will post photos soon!

Third Trimester Tantrums

Pregnant women are already a force to be reckoned with but if you encounter an almost 8-month pregnant woman, sweltering in the 100 degree weather, with 20 pounds of baby weight and swollen ankles--RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!

I have been very grateful to have had such an easy pregnancy- free of any major problems, symptoms, or the emotional roller coaster that many complain about. However, the last three weeks have made me feel like I belong in a mental institution because in one minute I not only suffer from multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, but I have also become the Queen of Passive Agressiva!

I am hot, cranky, angry at my husband for not getting me ice cream and then angry that he did bring me ice cream because my ankles are already swollen enough. I don't want to be touched but two seconds later I am mad because Dale is sitting three feet away from me. One minute I want to nap, the next I am roaring to clean the house. I am mad at Dale for having a beer, but the next I am encouraging it. I am a basket case! All this compounded with the slurry of visitors that we've had, the 100 degree days, and the mere thought that I am back to work full-time next week is enough to make me cry or laugh or scream, depending on the mood.

Poor Dale has to suffer through every tantrum and he does so graciously and patiently. His favorite phrases: "Yes, dear" "You were right, I was wrong. " "I don't know honey, what do you want to do?" and my personal favorite "Its all about you, you are the pregnant one."

But even he sometimes loses his cool after a million "yes, dears" which only perpetuates my hysteria. A typical night for us goes like this:

me: "What can I do for you?"
Dale: "Nothing." He knows that the real question is what can HE do for me!
me: "I want to make you happy, you always do stuff for me."
Dale: "I am fine." Still pondering the real question.
me: "No really, what do you want? Do you want to watch a movie? TV?"
Dale: "Yeah, whatever, we can watch a movie." Knowing that we will not watch a movie now that he has said this.
me: "I am too tired to watch a movie, maybe I will just go to bed." Thinking Dale will come and lay down with me to.
Dale: "I am not ready to lay down, go on without me."
me: "Hummmph." Heads to bed angry. Dale follows a few seconds later and lays down next to his now sobbing wife.
Dale: "What can I do for you?" Realizing he should have just asked in the beginning and saved himself the trouble.

I recognize the illogical nature of this episode and yet it still happens, every night! I don't even want to be friends with my pregnant self right now, let alone be married to me! So bless you Dale, for all the hard work you put in to this. I am sorry for all the tantrums, confusing conversations, and selfish moments that you endure from me. You are the true hero in this relationship and clearly deserving of one of those coffee mugs that reads "world's best dad".

The Unwanted House Guest....

Hosting out of town visitors also inevitably means you are hosting their house guests as well....of course, I am referring to GERMS! I have somehow managed to avoid getting sick this entire pregnancy by taking vitamins religiously and slurping down tea any time my throat tickles, however, Monday morning after all our visitors had left, that throat tickle wouldn't go away!

I slept. I chugged orange juice. I drank tea. I took extra vitamin C. The next day the tickle was still there. I wasn't running a fever, so I decided to hold off calling the doc. I chugged more water and went to bed and woke up with my eyes sealed shut! I had PINK EYE!

On top of the throat tickle, which turned out to be a sinus infection which I guess migrated to my eyes. For those of you who have had pink eye I am sympathetic for I didn't know you could actually have SNOT coming out your eyes!

I called my doctor who didn't even want to see me and instead called in a prescription to our nearest pharmacy. A couple hours later, a few medicated eye drops and some heavy duty antibiotic, I was breathing a little easy and able to see--although somewhat fuzzy.

Today, I am tired but feeling better and looking forward to relaxing this weekend with the armload of movies that line our shelf and my favorite pint of Ben & Jerrie's.

In the future, visitors staying at Hotel Pittman will be asked to check their germs at the door.

Baby Registry....DONE!

A few weeks ago I posted about my miseries in trying to establish a baby registry. For all those who think it simply involves the click of a scanner gun, be aware! Registering for baby is not for the faint-hearted and weak stomachs.

It involves a complicated process of looking at product reviews, checking safety recalls, and of course deciding between price, color, model, and brand. For each item, it takes me about 20 minutes of reviewing all the information, sometimes more.

For example, I wanted to register for a stroller. I looked at strollers, checked out the ones that all the required features, looked at those with the highest reviews, checked safety recalls, and finally narrowed down by price, only to discover that the stroller I want isn't even available through Target. All that took 45 minutes.

Maybe I am a baby registry overachiever but we plan on having multiple children and the stuff we buy, we want to it to not only be safe but last more than a few years. My time as a preschool teacher has also led me to have a certain attitude about what things are appropriate and necessary. Returning to the stroller concept, in experience, rear-facing strollers are better for children. They provide better bonding opportunities, reduce anxiety, and increase language acquisition. Therefore, the standard stroller wont do. Call me a baby merchandise elitist, all those years learning to be a teacher have forever cursed my outlook on child rearing.

Aside from choosing quality and safe stuff, there is the problem of sorting through absolute baby junk. All the buying guides insist that you buy a diaper stacker or a wipe warmer, or some other useless piece of crap. A diaper stacker is a hanging cloth tent that stores diapers, convenient for diaper changes. $20 later and a few months of frustration stuffing the damn thing, may cause the diaper stacker to lose its appeal. Baby buying guides are specifically geared towards first time moms who have no experience with baby stuff and prey on our emotions and sensitivity convincing us that we need all this CRAP. So after weeks of deleting the most unnecessary stuff, I finally narrowed down to what I actually need, what I want, and of course, those cute little extras like fuzzy socks.

After a month of torture, spending my evenings off scrolling product reviews I am pleased to announce that we have completed our baby registry! You can find us at Target, online or in store, just search our names and our long list that was proudly put together can be viewed for your pleasure. Or follow the link: https://www.target.com/registry/baby/2VG2RY1JPOSYZ

I look forward to reporting more about this whole baby registry process, because I am sure that in a year's time I will be complaining about the POS stroller or play yard failing to meet all of my high expectations, or cursing every time I have to use a cold wipe in the middle of a Montana winter on my crying baby's ass (thinking to myself that I should have gotten the wipe warmer, of course). In any case, I hope to further study the issue and maybe one day create a baby registry that meets every parents needs in a safe, efficient, cute! and cost-effective way.

Enough of my rant.

PS Target apparently doesnt let you register for most clothing items, books, and nursing apparel, most likely because their selection varies so much store to store. This is another frustration I plan on fixing!

BabyMoon is Wearing off

Don't get me wrong, I love being pregnant and for the most part have been feeling better, more energized, and happier than I was before becoming pregnant. However, no one ever tells you how long 9 months really is. I am exactly half way there and it has occurred to me that I have another long 4.5 months before this baby comes out. I wish I could have someone babysit my baby bump so I could enjoy a few glasses of wine, perhaps amaretto on the rocks, a roller coaster or two, and go on some extreme hikes. Unfortunately, that wont happen anytime soon so I am stuck salivating as Dale sips on his beer and remind myself that its all for a good cause!

Most of the time I don't miss the drinking. Sure, I partied a lot in college but to be honest, I never enjoyed drinking. I hated the taste of the alcoholic concoctions we created, usually vodka drunk from the bottle and chased with sprite. I hated the gassy feeling that beer gave me after chugging a six-pack of light beer and don't get me started with the drunken phone calls and hangovers.

Since graduating I have refined my taste for booze and stuck with the simple tall glass of red wine or a pint of dark ale preferably from Eastern Europe. Just when I finally realized how to savor, taste, and enjoy the occasional glass, I got pregnant. Now that the weather is warming up all I can think about is a glass of cream sherry, served chilled with an orange slice.

Dale and I went up to Flathead Lake last week and it was beautiful. Flathead is probably the most beautiful area of Montana (in my opinion) and provided us with some much needed R&R. The weather was perfect. The lake (which is bigger than Tahoe) was clear, pristine, and undisturbed. The nights were cool and revealed a cosmic array of stars better than any planetarium I have ever been to. We stopped at a winery and two breweries, of course, I stuck with ice tea while Dale sipped signature brewed ales. It didn't really bother me, except of course, when the weather got warmed, the sun hotter and all I could think about was showering myself in a light beer, Corona anyone?

We went on a little hike. The way back was pretty steep and I found myself losing my balance and air! I was exhausted and had to stop every 20 feet on the trail. So my dreams of backpacking this summer may be over as this little one growing inside me has decided that he's not an outdoors fan. I guess I will take it easy.

I lazed around this weekend, spent a lot of time of the computer and watching Grey's Anatomy, Season 1 & 2 and I am quickly running out of episodes for season 3. I am bored! The house is clean, the garden planted, the animals fed and napping in the sun. I have got the energy of a 4-year old on heroine and I am bored.

So yes, the next 4.5 months will be long and the babymoon is wearing off. Did I mention my clothes don't fit, I have more stretchmarks...on my ARM?!!!? and my hormones have caused the angry pregnant monster lady to emerge, biting the head off anyone that crosses her path.

For all those reading this, enjoy your day. Have a glass of wine or perhaps a beer and think of me, just don't tell me about it otherwise the angry pregnant monster lady (APML) might get jealous enough to eat your brains. While you are enjoying your wine, go for hike, run a marathon, eat sushi, do all the things that I cant and enjoy them to their fullest.

Stretchmarks and Floods

I am 15 weeks and so far have been very lucky with my pregnancy. I had no morning sickness, my hair looks great, and even my former bitten, raw fingernails are long and healthy. Today, I was getting ready for work and I happened to notice some stretchmarks, right by my belly button. Seriously, STRETCH MARKS! I freaked out and called Dale into the room to confirm my suspicion. They weren't there yesterday. They erupted somewhere between last night and this morning. I have great skin, I was hoping to avoid these little ruptures. I guess its karma for bragging about no morning sickness.
So I am off to the store to by cocoa butter to lather these SOB's in. I love that I am showing so early (being short) but the downside is I have popped so fast that my skin cant keep up. Pretty soon my belly is going to resemble the US Highway map!

Aside from the stretch marks, things appear normal and great. The heartburn has pretty much disappeared but my appetite remains strong. FYI: Don't get between a pregnant woman and her dinner. Last week I made cream of lemon chicken soup (my favorite) and I was enjoying the last of my bowl. I was about to get a second helping when Dale walked in the with the rest in a bowl for himself. I just sat there, salivating, watching him enjoy every precious bite of soup and felt steam rising through my ears. My face was hot and all I could think about was grabbing the bowl from him and running away. Of course I didn't say anything until a few days later. Now Dale is afraid to touch anything I make for fear that the very angry pregnant woman may attack.

In other news, one of Dale's co-workers has given his two weeks notice which means that there is a possibility of Dale going full-time and maybe even getting a day shift or two which would be wonderful! Dale loves his job at the Good Food Store and it seems that his co-workers and customers appreciate his charming and well mannered attitude. Keep your fingers crossed.

Last year, we went to Alaska for two weeks with a friend of ours, Jarred. We spent a couple days at Jarred's family cabin in Eagle, AK. Eagle is 14 hours from Anchorage and sits on the Canadian-Yukon and Alaska border, separated only by the Yukon river. We had planned to canoe the Yukon but with last years high-river we played it safe and instead spent a few nights camping near the Yukon and historic Fort Egbert. It was relaxing and beautiful and yet mysterious.
With this year's quick warm up the Yukon flooded, sending water and sheets of ice through the town of Eagle, decimating almost every structure. Jarred doesn't know the status of his cabin but it is most likely underwater along with the rest of Eagle's historic downtown. I attached some pictures of the flooding as well as the link to the article. http://www.newsminer.com/news/2009/may/05/yukon-river-flood-destroys-buildings-eagle/

Smell of Summer

I am not a warm-weather person. I love a 45 degree climate when all you need is a light jacket, jeans and sweater to go outside. However, I do love the smell of summer, it makes me giddy like a 13-year old flirt. I love when I open my door and take a step outside and there is a sweetness that fills the air. I don't know if its cut grass, flowers, or the sun radiating off the hills. Either way, that smell drives me wild. On Saturday, I had to be up early for a service project and upon opening the door my knees weakened. It smelled like summer.

Summer is almost here and while we still have some cold days I am starting to think about our summer plans. I picked up a hiking Montana book to scour out some nice trails in the Missoula area and immediately, I was circling the map, checking driving distances, and already thinking about what to pack. We love camping and backpacking and no longer living in Seattle means we can do this things almost effortlessly.

Being pregnant, of course, I have to limit myself to the easier hikes. So I kept my eyes out for 10-mile overnight hikes and was surprised to find so many of them within 100-miles of us. Living in Montana I have taken for granted the wide range of beauty that is in our state. Whether you want densely forested pine trees, mountains, or ancient cedars, lakes, and waterfalls, or high dessert its all here, it just depends what direction you drive. The trick is figuring out where you want to go first.

There are several 2-day trips that I would love to take, I think it just depends on the weather. I have a feeling the smell of summer will send me somewhere...just anywhere but indoors!
