photo therapy:: Kannon's 16 month pics

These are a month overdue. We moved our computer upstairs, changed some files around, and I could never get them uploaded.  But here they are---FINALLY! I posted these on my photography blog as well. 

We went to Long Beach, CA to visit my family and while we had some down time, Kannon and I hit the beach.  He loved the sand, the slide, the blue skies.  He kept pointing "up".  Clearly, we don't see enough sunshine in Seattle!

Our big boy, is now a 22 lb, running, jumping, signing, screeching toddler!  Oh joy!

Life Update

We have been less than conversational these days.  So far this year we have been battling colds, airports, work, tantrums, and adapting to our constantly changing life.  In between the chaos, we barely have time to pick up the phone, email, or even chat with best friends---we are simply too tired.  Alas, I feel an end is near as things begin to even out (for the moment!).  So here are some updates on all of us.

1.) Kannon is growing into a little man more and more everyday.  I feel so blessed to have such an incredibly handsome, gentle, smart, and funny little guy.  He jumps, dances, spins in circles, and runs across our floor.  He climbs beds, tables, couches, and anything given the opportunity.  He eats everything and loves the Trader Joe's Apple-Carrot Crushers in particular.  Kannon is using spoons and forks and drinking out of big kid cups.  He can sign "sleep, milk, water, please, change, poop, water, eat, hungry, and more".  In fact, twice this week he has signed "change me" before he even pooped!!!!  And yesterday in a moment of fussiness, he walked up to Dale and with two exaggerated hands he signed "sleep".  This kid knows what he wants and how to get it!!!  He loves his brother and has a new playmate, Pike (7 months old).  Together they have been building legos, reading books, and playing with blocks.

Side note:  I was getting Pike, Kannon, and Clark ready for bed.  Both Pike and Clark were crying while I was mixing a bottle for Pike.  I turned around and Kannon was handing his sippy cup to Pike and patting Clark's belly with a little blankie at the same time!  This kid is such a big helper already!!!

2.) Clark is the happiest baby I have ever met!  He is constantly smiling and laughing.  He laughs at the dog, Kannon, Dale, shadows--EVERYTHING!  I have met some happy babies but Clark has smile lines already from the perma-smile splashed across his face.  He knows how to roll-over but doesn't like to do it.  He has found his hands and feet and everything in between.  Clark has started eating solids (slowly) and while it has improved the sleep situation, it is still not great.  Clark sleeps from 8-8 but he wakes up at 10, 12, 2, 4, and 6 most nights.  Sometimes he surprises us with an 8-5 stretch but it is rare.  I AM TIRED!!!  But its worth it for this cutie pie!

3.) Dale still loves his job.  He recently had the pleasure of serving Dana Cowin (editor of Food & Wine mag) and redesigned the wine menu.  The chefs he works for have been nominated for another James Beard Award.  With the weather getting nicer, Dale has started riding his bike to work which has meant many more outings for the boys and me.  Dale is looking into the next level of the Court of the Masters Sommelier.  The next test is in September but its almost $600 and a lot of studying!  We have to see where things are going before we just hand over our credit card. In between work and sleep, Dale loves taking the boys for walks, tasting new beers, of course cooking for all of us starving fools!

4.)  Me.  Well, I am tired.  I have had a lot of stuff going on.  First off, I have a BIG interview next Wednesday at 9 for Teach for America.  I applied in 2008 and was not accepted but it was fortunate because I met Dale, got married, and moved to Montana.  This year, TFA is starting in Seattle and I realllly want to become a corps member for so many reasons--I wont bore you with them.  Keep your fingers crossed!!!!  If I am not accepted I will be opening my own photography studio to grow my photography business and finish the details on a little exciting project (SECRET!).  I have decided to stop selling on my Etsy site as it has become too much to keep up with.  With everything that I have going on, knitting a few hats and rolling dryer balls isnt really on the top of my list.  I have been so exhausted lately that staying up to watch/knit has become impossible.  So farewell Etsy, you have been good to me.  

See, we are good.  We have not fallen off the earth or disappeared in a snow-storm.  Our lives just never stop moving.  I dont stop moving between 8-8 and even when the kids are sleeping work is to be had.  I just got back from vacation but I am already ready for another one!!!

PS For those of you have had problems/dropped calls on our phone.  We got new phones!!!  Hopefully these will hold a charge and avoid Kannon's sticky fingers so we can talk without disruptions!  

Kannon Updates:: 15 months old

My sweet boy just keeps growing!  Lately, Kannon has been climbing, exploring, and it is hard to keep up (especially when you have a baby strapped to your chest!).  My little toddler is revealing his personality to us day by day and we are in love with the little man he is becoming.  Joy!


At 15 months:
Kannon weighs 22 lbs and is 30 inches tall
Kannon sleeps in a full size mattress on the floor
He can unscrew and screw lids on things
He says "bow, wow, wow" "meow" "mama, dada, baba, nemma" and "haaaa"
He loves pancakes, noodles, oranges, blueberries, and apple-carrot crushers
He waves hi and bye
Kannon signs "more, eat, drink, please, and help"
He loves his little brother
He can climb on the bed and couch by himself
He can walk down the stairs holding the wall
Kannon tries to put on shoes, socks, and jackets (but he has more fun taking them off)

We just love him!

sleep.

We aren't getting much sleep lately.  Between Dale's late night schedule, the etsy orders I have been cranking out, and Clark who can't decide what his schedule is, I am lucky if I get 5 hours.   The lack of sleep leaves us a little less than 100%.  We lose things, snap at each other, and fall asleep 5 minutes into Top Chef.  The sleep issue has somehow created a black hole for things to fall into.

Like our cell phone charger which was here and then gone.
Like Dale's work apron which apparently walked its way out of our house.
and sadly, like the ipod touch we got new just last week.  Lost. Stolen.  Whatever you call it.

Alas, I digress. I have spent the week addressing the sleep issue and I think I have it down.  If Clark goes to bed at 8pm, I have to wake him up at midnight to nurse, otherwise he will sleep till 3 and then wake up every hour after that.  If he goes to bed at 10, he sleeps through the night.  What a weirdo!  

The boys are sharing a room and have been for the last few weeks and it is going remarkably well.  Kannon, formerly a light sleeper, doesn't even stir when I come in to nurse.  And lastly, Kannon just moved into a real bed.  That's right peeps, I kicked him out of the crib and put him in a queen size bed on the floor.  His first reaction?  Grabbed a blanket, his monkey, and rolled around.  I think he gets the idea.  We will just see how the rest of the night goes.

Anyways, I apologize fore the lack of postings lately, things are just to effin' busy around here!!!!  I can't wait for Christmas so I can recover.  Santa will you bring me sleeping pills and a breast pump?

Updates

Okay, so I am a bit behind on the updates.   My mom was here, we celebrated Kannon's 1-year birthday, and I have just been catching up.

Kannon is doing great.  Our pediatrician is wonderful and had fun flirting with Kannon.  He is walking, clapping, waving hi and by.  He says mama, baba, dada, lala, nemma and random babbles.  Kannon hates cauliflower and refried beans but eats everything else.  He loves his legos and nesting boxes.  He LOOOVEES books, and spends most of the day looking at them.  Kannon now has 6 teeth.  Twice now, he has tried to bite us.  He is also noticing Clark more and starting to bring him things like food, toys, and clothes.  He is a little small for his age but we aren't surprised as we are both short people.  Kannon got his MMR and Hep A vaccine and we went our merry little way....granted Kannon was a little pissed about his shots but he recovered quickly.  We will go back when he is 15 months old!

Clark is growing like a champ!!! He is already growing so much differently than big brother Kannon.  During the day he nurses every 1 1/2 hours.  At night, he sleeps 5-1/2 -6 hours, wakes to nurse and then wakes up every 2 hours after that.  Clark has started smiling and giggles in his sleep :)  Twice this week I have found Clark sleeping on his side.  He is already so different from Kannon as a baby.  He loves to be swaddled, sleeps well everywhere, except his carseat.  He is alert, quiet, and loves to be around us.  He is still sleeping most of the day but when he is awake, he smiles, coos, and stares at us with his big brown eyes.  We love our little guy!

To My Wild Child, Kannon

It is hard to believe that one year ago I was rocking through contractions, embracing labor, and experiencing a rush of doubt, uncertainty, fear, and love.  Will I be a good mother? What will you look like? What kind of child will you be?  But with each 'what if' I grew more and more anxious to meet your little face.  At 9:24pm on Wednesday October 28, 2009 I became a mother and my life was forever changed---by you. 

You were everything that we dreamed.  Perfect, peaceful, and content.  You were placed on my chest and I fell in love.  Your soft hair, fleshy skin, and sweet smell enveloped me.  We spent hours just gazing at you silent but proud and totally in love.

It wasn't long before you showed us your personality.  You fought the swaddle, preferred independence, and spent hours observing the world around you.  You are creature of habit, you like your routine, and let us know (quite loudly!) if we have skipped a step in your day.  Your smile is charming, your laugh contagious, and your eyes offer wisdom beyond your year. 

We were nervous about becoming parents but you encouraged us and supported us in our journey.  Together we learn , grow, and fall more in love. We watch you smile, laugh, and giggle and we know that we are doing our job.  We gave you life but you have showed us how to live. 

We are not perfect.  We learn every day.  We sometimes skip diaper changes, let you cry just a few more minutes, or give you leftovers for dinner.  Sometimes, we tempt you and let you go for those stairs or encourage you to walk just a bit further and then watch you fall.  But still you love us and each time, you stand up and hold yourself together.

You are strong, wild, independent, free spirited and crave adventure.  

I never thought my favorite thing on Saturday would be rolling on the floor barking just to hear you laugh.  I never thought I would be eating sweet potatoes every day just because they are your favorite.  I never thought that I would be a mother to two boys, let alone one! 

With each passing day you grow and learn even more.  With each passing day we learn more about life, love, and parenthood.  You are the greatest gift the world has given me.  Not only were you born on your birth day, but I came alive and finally became a mother on your birth day.  It has only been a year but I feel that we have known each other lifetimes.  Remember always, to smile, be silly, and love on this momentous day.

some updates

I have been so busy blogging about our family adjusting to life with 2 babies that I have forgotten some major updates!

First, Kannon is walking!!! He still mostly crawls, but everyday he takes brave steps that are getting longer and longer.  Today, he walked almost 15 feet before he decided to give up and crawl.  Here is a video of him in action:

Kannon is turning one next week and not a day goes by that I dont think about this momentuous occasion.  Kannon can drink out of his own cup.  He can open bottles, especially my Gatorade bottles that I thought were foolproof.  He speaks nonsense all the time.  Mostly bababa's, dada's, and mama's but they are slurred together in long sentences that we are still translating. 

Our little boy who used to eat everything seems to finally be developing his own tastes.  Whatever he doesn't like goes to Emma (the dog).  These days, it has been tomatoes, carrots, and turkey.  He still loves his blueberries and while they are messy they certainly keep his diaper habits regular!

Kannon finally understands 'no' and he pouts his lips out when he say it...but he does stop whatever it was that deserved the 'no'.  He is one rolly-polly kid and spends a lot of time rolling around on the floor from the dog bed to the couch.  No one knows why.  He has transitioned fully to whole milk and the cup.  He is becoming a toddler!  What a big boy!!!! 

Did I mention he also became a big brother?????

Which brings me to Clark who is growing bigger by the day.  His umbillical cord fell off at 8 days....Kannon held onto his for 2 weeks!  Clark got his first bath.  He was hesitant at first but finally warmed up to the notion when we started rubbing his feet.  Here is a video:

Clark is still eating like a champ.  He nurses during the day every 2 hours but sleeps in 4-5 hour stretches at night which is heavenly!  Kannon and Clark have very similar schedules already.  They both pass out hard around 8pm and wake up for good at 8am.  Clark obviously still spends most of his day sleeping, but he is most alert between 8-10am and 3-5pm.  Clark has his 2-week check up on Friday and *gulp* is also getting circumcised.  We will be sure to share his stats when the day comes.

I am adjusting well to life with the two.  We have made a lot of sacrifices that allow me to stay at home for the time being.  However, I am beginning to start the job search for something part-time starting in January.  We are very lucky that Dale goes to work at 5 or 6 most days because that means we have all day together with both kiddos.  The few hours that I have both boys without Dale are chaos but each day is getting better and better as I learn how to keep them both happy.....sometimes it means lollipops before dinner or 15 trips up and down the stairs to pop a pacifier in Clark's mouth.  Whew.  But before I know it, it is 8pm and both are asleep.  More updates to come.

mama confesses:: too fast

It is all happening too fast.  Somedays I turn around and my sweet little baby who once fit perfectly in the crook of my arm is playing by himself in his room.  He doesn't need me.  In between the chaos of packing and moving Kannon grew up.  Somehow, I missed it.

Of course, he is still my baby and he has tons of growing up to do still.  It just seems like overnight that he grew this little personality and became his own little man.  Silly.  Serious.  Smiley.  Serene. 

While I wasn't looking, Kannon took four real steps from his toy box to his chair.  He stood there, smiling, proud, and tried to turnaround but stopped, distracted by a book.  He read his books and before I could give him a kiss and a hug he was off with a flash toward our bedroom in search of something else.  He knows what he wants and he goes for it---a trait just like his mommy. 

So in between our move, Kannon grew up.  Here is what you missed:

1.) He has 4 teeth.
2.) He eats all table foods.  He feeds himself everything from blueberries, pancakes, and chicken...whatever we are eating.
3.) He can hold his own cup AND drink from a straw.
4.) He knows to hold his arms up when we take his shirt off....so smart!
5.) Every morning he crawls into our room and pops the Baby Einstein video into the VCR for his morning entertainment.
6.) He is saying Emma (which sounds like "nenna") Nana, Mama, Dada, baba, and various syllables in between.
7.) He follows me everywhere and in the kitchen he likes to hold my leg while I cook.  Until I give him a whisk to help, then he loses interest.
8.) He climbs up everything!!! Stairs, toy boxes, slides, he even tried climbing up our couch! 
9.) He took his first "class".  We went to Gymboree where he played with other kids, toys, and impressed the teachers with his charm and intrigue....we will be going back!
10.) He can read!  No, of course not, but he does like books.  He drags them over to me when we wants to read and it is seriously adorable. 

Kannon is the light of our lives.  He brings smiles and laughter into our world.  Even on the most difficult days, he has a way of warming our heart.  But it all happens too fast, I just want to freeze time forever. Soon, he will be a big brother and our life will be even double the trouble...and double the love.

silver linings

Dale and I still don't know the status of his job or where we are going end up moving but amidst all the chaos there are some silver linings that get me through each day.

1.) Kannon has more teeth coming in!!!!  His top teeth are growing in a bit more each day....which make him a little bit fussy but also so much more of a Mama's boy (hehe!)

2.) Kannon has also started saying "mama, baba, and dada".  He calls everything "dada"  Books, toys, the dog, everything.  He only says "Mama" when he is screaming, upset that something was taken away...or god forbid we change his diaper.

3.) Kannon and our dog have developed this interesting relationship at dinner time.  Kannon grabs a piece of food, looks over the edge of his high chair to see if Emma is there....and drops the food.  He laughs, giggles, and goes for another piece.  Yes, I should chastise both of them....but it is too dang cute!!!!

4.) Fluffy diapers.  We got a bunch of cloth diapers with some mysterious paypal money.  I usually go for broke and buy the BumGenius or SmartiPants but this time we got some Kawaii Baby diapers from Sweetbottoms Baby for half the price.  Totally adorable and loving the black tuxedo diaper that makes Kannon looks ready for a ball.

5.) New friends.  Finally, after almost a year of having no female companionship that understands what it is to be pregnant, have a kid, and survive on 2 hours of sleep, I finally found a friend.  Coffee, library and splash pad dates are just so much more fun when you are not just talking to a 9 month old.

6.) It is hot, humid, and I would rather not be pregnant right now.  But my due date is 6 weeks away and I am wishing that it was much further away....for the first time, the gestation period of an elephant is sounding good merely because I am not ready to be a mother of 2 boys!

7.)  I paid off a student loan.  It had a whopping balance of $62.

8.) Mostly, we have just been having fun as a family.  Story time and bath time our now family affairs.  Kannon actually likes to sit and read and the heat has lead all of us to the wading pool for a chance to cool off.  Kannon is so very loved!!!

9.)  We decided on a name for baby#2.  But its a secret!!!  You will just have to wait to find out!

10.) Did I mention that Kannon feeds himself 100% now.  He eats EVERYTHING from strawberries to asparagus and eggs.  What a cutie!

I apologize for the last blog that was a little more than depressing. I find it funny that its okay to talk about baby poop and vomit but talking about our problems is a little more than taboo.  I broke the rule but I am glad that everyone is at least on the same page.

mama confesses:: 9 months

Most mothers get excited about 1-year birthdays and milestones but I prefer the 9 month celebration.  Knanon is 9 months old today.  That means he has been alive and on this earth for as long as I carried him in my womb.  FINALLY! 

They never tell you how long 9 months really is.  When you are pregnant, it seems like eternities pass by.  The days slow, you stumble out of bed frustrated with the gigantic weight you are carrying and you beg (BEG!) for your little one to arrive.  And then....bam!  Your little one has arrived, kicking and screaming, and is suddenly turning 9 months old. 

Life is a miracle.  Growth, development, change.  I was always wowed reading weekly pregnancy milestones.  Reading about ears, skin, and fat cells developing--it all seems so unreal.  In 9 months Kannon went from a merger of a few cells to a living breathing baby.

Now, in 9 months, he has gone from a vulnerable, helpless, sleeping and pooping all the time baby to a little man with quite the personality.  He crawls, stands, laughs (adorable body shaking giggles) and feeds himself.  He plays with Daddy, the dog, and the cats.  He thinks mirrors are amazing and fans blowing wind in his face refreshing.  Kannon, once our tiny 7 lbs baby, is now 19 lbs and 12 oz and 27 inches long.  And he just keeps growing!

We are so blessed to have him in our lives.  He constantly showers us with love, amazement, and amusement.  He makes Dale smile in a way I never knew existed. Kannon makes me tear up for no reason, just because I love him.  

Even amidst the chaos, we remember how lucky it is to have family.  Without family, we would not be where we are today.  Those of you that have supported, encouraged, and loved us--we say thanks!  We hope you feel the same.  I hope Kannon knows how much he is loved.  

Today, on Kannon's 9 month birthday, he gave me the most precious gift---he said "Mama".

mama confesses:: no longer a baby

I always wondered when I would stop looking at Kannon as the fragile newborn he once was.  He will always be MY baby but lately it seems we are witnessing Kannon become the man he is destined to be.  Hi personality is shining.  He is independent.  He crawls, stands, scoots, and cruises for the things HE wants.  We can't just hold him and stare at him as he squirms to get away.  Kannon sleeps sprawled out in his crib--he is a bed hog!  The past few days, we have found him quietly standing in his crib staring out the window--peacefully and content.

He no longer looks like a baby.  He no longer acts like a baby.  He is no longer a baby.

Once he was able to pull himself up we knew he would be growing up soon.  Now, he crawls around the living room, into the kitchen, and to the bathroom.  He tries to pull himself up on garbage cans, desks, and chairs.  He cruises along the couches and yesterday he tried to take his first unassisted step.  It was wobbly and more of a fall but he landed safely in my arms.  It won't be long.

Kannon has teeth.  He eats graham crackers, lasagna, and bananas---whole.  He knows how to drink from cups and prefers water in plastic cups.  He is down to 2 bottles of formula a day.  He takes man-sized poops.  He is no longer a baby. 

We went to the park and Kannon wanted nothing to do with us.  He tried crawling downhill, eating grass, and sat and watched the dogs playing.  I think he finally remembered that we there and he turned around smiling.  He is learning and growing and it is happening all to quickly.

Whew.  

Life sometimes carries you away without a chance to catch up.  Our lives have been incredibly busy as Dale embarks on new territory and I finally have a chance to pursue my passions.

We had visitors.  Kannon started crawling.  We have been rolling dryer ball after dryer ball in preparation for MADEfair.  I have been portfolio building for my new photography business.  Kannon went to bed and woke up with 2 teeth.  Our lives have been crazy, upside down, full of chaos, action, and poop.  

Whew.

I hope to get back to a more regular schedule of postings and I am going to keep this post short.  In a nutshell (or a list, as I prefer) here is our life.

1.) Kannon got professional photos taken last week with Kim Stadler Photography in Spokane.  They turned out soo cute! 

2.) We got accepted into MADEfair, a handmade arts and craft fair in Missoula.  So we are busy rolling dryer balls for the upcoming event on June 27th.

3.) My grandparents were in town for a week so we were busy visiting with them.  We had so much fun eating at new restaurants, exploring Lake Coeur d'Alene by boat, and swimming.  Kannon was especially said to see them go :(

4.) Kannon started crawling.  It looks more like a cross between drowning on land and scrambling from danger but it is indeed movement that takes him from one end of the living room to the other.  

5.) We finally got a washer, dryer and lawn mower.  We are so lucky to have an incredible amount of love and support from our family!  Now our diapers are clean and our lawn looks less like a jungle.

6.) Kannon sprouted 2 teeth.  His lower teeth came in overnight and he is freakin adorable.  He does get caught off guard when he accidentally bites himself.  Poor guy.

7.) I am nearing my 3rd trimester.  Bean#2 is really starting to kick, roll, and punch.  Not too mention, I am starting to feel exhausted!!!

8.) We have narrowed down names for bean#2, but again, we won't be sharing our final decision until D-day!

9.) My etsy site has been exploding with orders lately.  Plus, I have been branching out making newborn photography props for fellow photographers.  My fingers are starting to hurt!!!

10.) My brother Sam has been visiting and we have so much fun hanging out.  We will be sad to see him leave!

11.) Dale has had a busy month so far with New West Spirits.  He added a few new accounts, including Fred Meyer...a major purchaser of wine!!!

12.) I have been portfolio building and have given a name and face to my new photography business, Happy Mama Photography.   Since launching this week, I have already scheduled a few engagement and senior sessions.  I am starting to get nervous!!! Things are finally under control and we are so pleased to have had so much success in the last few weeks.  Despite our rough start in Coeur d'Alene, we are finally catching our breath and learning the ropes!  

photo therapy:: new rules

Kannon has figured out how to pull himself from sitting to standing.  He first learned how to do this in the bathtub and is now pulling himself up on everything.  The toy box, ottoman, and my hair are all tools to his new skill.  Now that this is going on, we have to keep an even more careful eye on Kannon because not only does he sometimes fall back, but he takes everything with him.  We have had to set some new rules in our house to keep our carpet and baby tear free. 

Mommy Moment #3

I meant for the "Mommy Moment" post to happen more frequently and offer a little a humor into our sometimes chaotic life.  Truth is, every moment is a mommy moment.  Some are a funnier than others (like when I fling poop across the room), others are sentimental, and others are just plain full of frustration.  These moments happen all day, every day and rarely do I have time to sit down and document. 

Today, however, is a real mommy moment.  Today, Kannon is 7 months old.  For the first time since Kannon was born, I looked at him not as a newborn, but as the little man is starting to become. 

Our day was easy.  We slept in, made pancakes, and laid on the living room floor.  We played outside and took a nap.  Kannon laughed, picked up blocks, and tried to crawl.  He was in charge, he made all the decision--like going for the red block instead of the blue.  He flirts, giggles, and knows how to get attention.  Kannon is a charmer. 

7 months ago, Kannon was just being born.  He was perfect, peaceful, content, and my heart grew bigger than ever.  He is still perfect and peaceful, but he is so much fun now!  I am not going to lie, I loved him as an infant and can't wait to share those days again with bean#2 but this age is so amazing!  Everyday is full of learning and everyday my heart grows bigger and bigger at the awesomeness that is motherhood. 

No poop in this mommy moment, just straight up love.  Happy 7 months.
